The Tropical Pineapple

Ananas comosus • The Tropical Crown

The King of Fruits

Pineapples are unique—they are bromeliads, absorbing water through their leaves. You don't need seeds; you can grow one from the top of a store-bought fruit! While they take time (up to 2 years), the result is a fruit far sweeter and juicier than anything imported. It makes a stunning architectural plant in a pot.

How to Grow

01

Twist & Dry

Twist the crown off a ripe pineapple. Peel off lower leaves to expose the stem. Let it 'cure' (dry) on a counter for 2 days to prevent rot.

02

Rooting

Place the dried stem in water or plant directly into well-draining cactus mix. Roots will form in a few weeks.

03

Sun & Care

Pineapples love sun. Give them the brightest spot you have. Water lightly but pour water into the central 'cup' of leaves.

04

Forcing Fruit

If the plant won't fruit after 2 years, bag it with a ripe apple. The ethylene gas will trigger flowering.
